It's 1462, Vallachia. Vlad Tepes fights in defence of Christianity against Ottoman Empire's army. Far away from him, in his castle his wife, princess Elisabetha, cheated by Vlad's enemies kills herself 'cause she thinks that her beloved husband is dead. After his victory Vlad returns to home. When he realizes the drama his rage is stronger than his religious devotion. Feeling betrayed by God he takes an oath of revenge. Among blasphemies and endless despair rises Dracula, The Prince of Darkness.
It's 1890, London. Young aristocracy girl, Mina and her fiance, Jonathan celebrates their farewell. He's going to Transilvania in business, to sell properties in England. When he arrives, he becomes trapped by Dracula in Dracula's castle. Count saw in Jonathan's hand the portrait of Mina. By this sight painful memories comes back. Dracula thinks that Mina is a reincarnation of his beloved Elisabetha and he immediately begins his trip to London to find his lost love after long centuries of sorrow. Everything seems to be in order in his plan till the moment when Mina gets a letter from Jonathan who did escape from his trap. Jonathan writes in it how dangerous person Dracula is indeed. Mina doesn't know yet that Dracula is a vampire. Meantime dr Van Helsing arrives to London to look after a strange disease of Mina's best friend, Lucy. Lucy - lecherous and wild contradiction to modest and pious Mina suffers from anaemia which is an initial stage of transformation in vampire. Of course Count Dracula is responsible for this. Van Helsing, a famous vampirologist, finally meets someone who he's been seeking since long time. The big fight against time, desires and Count has begun. Passion is stronger than Mina who fallen in love with Dracula is wishing to be transformed to live forever with his beloved. Dracula full of discrepant thoughts finally follows his passions and love. From this moment Van Helsing and his friends start the fight against time in defence of almost condemned to damnation Mina's soul. Dracula escapes to Transilvania and they follows him to chase and kill befeore it will be too late for Mina.
In my opinion this movie is a masterpiece, the best movie with the vampire theme of all times. A classical story taken place in Victorian London enchants with its unique atmosphere unparalleled in other movies. Magnificent costumes, indoors, outdoors and daring acting of G.Oldman, W.Ryder and A.Hopkins... all those worths makes the masterly vision of movie genius, F.F.Coppola. Music composed by Wojciech Kilar is highly impressive, makes this work of art more making breathless by its charm. Motives from this soundtrack sounds even in creations of some metal bands with a vampiric image.
